There are manufacturers who wholly and solely concentrate on the kids umbrellas. They have an in-house team of designers who constantly work on newer designs and patterns meant for the young ones. Apart from that some larger manufacturers have a research team that work on various materials that can be used to make lighter and yet sturdy umbrellas for kids.

Generally the ordinary variety of a kids umbrella would have prints of mickey mouse, donald duck, Barbie, teddy bears, toys, and other children's objects and cartoon characters. These umbrellas are in varied colors that are identified as colors for boys and girls. For instance, the colors for boys are the darker shades with prints such as that of toy soldiers, superman, batman, spiderman, etc. Those for girls are in lighter shades with feminine prints of flowers, Barbie dolls, teddy bears, etc.

There is also the fancy children's umbrellas. These are created in varied styles and shapes. For instance, an umbrella with a face wearing a cap. Some are also designed to represent the face of an animal. For example an umbrella with face of a dog with two ears that fall as flaps on either side of the canopy.

Some umbrellas for children are simple in terms of pattern and design, but are manufactured to protect the child completely. These are generally transparent and have a dome shaped canopy. When a child carries it, it looks like a dome or bell shaped cover protecting the child.
